FMVSS 138 Test Standard for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 138 specifies performance requirements for tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) installed in motor vehicles to prevent significantly under-inflation of tires, potential loss of control, and a collision. Applies to passenger cars, multi-purpose passenger cars (MPV), trucks and buses with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4.536 kilograms or less. These tools are required to comply with the General TPMS detection requirements.

Only one tire size and inflation pressure will be listed for tires fitted to the front and rear axles by the vehicle manufacturer. These labels will provide the recommended tire inflation pressure required to run the FMVSS 138 test procedure.

Vehicles certified to comply with FMVSS 138 are expected to perform their intended tire pressure monitoring system functions in the wide variety of streets, roads and environmental conditions encountered in the United States. For compliance testing purposes, performance is evaluated on a given road route.
