Approval of ECE R59 Backup Silencing Systems

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R59 standard. ECE R59 test regulation covers exhaust replacement muffler systems for M1 and N1 category vehicles. Silencing systems refers to a complete set of components required to limit the sound produced by an engine, its intake and exhaust (exhaust manifolds, catalysts and emission aftertreatment devices).

Approval of ECE R59 Backup Silencing Systems

Exhaust silencing system means a complete set of components necessary to limit the sound produced by the engine of a motor vehicle and the exhaust of a motor engine.

“variable geometry exhaust silencer system or exhaust silencing system component” means an exhaust silencing system or exhaust silencing system component that includes one or more moving parts or devices that can change the sound of the exhaust muffling system or exhaust muffling system component geometry. Reducing performance (for example, Moving parts or devices that change their noise reduction performance by opening or closing one or more valves in the exhaust gas flow as a function of changing driving or engine conditions (rpm, load, speed, etc.).

Exhaust muffling system component means one of the separate components that together make up the exhaust muffling system (eg, suitable muffler, expansion chamber, resonator).

The application for approval of the exhaust replacement muffling system or the components of the said system is made by the manufacturer or his duly accredited representative.

Each approved type will be given an approval number. Its first two digits will indicate the series of changes containing the most recent major technical changes to the Regulation at the time of approval. The same Contracting Party may not assign the same number to another type of replacement muffler system or component designed for the same vehicle type(s).

A notification of approval or denial of approval of an exhaust replacement silencing system or components of that system pursuant to this regulation will be communicated to the contracting parties implementing this regulation, via a model-appropriate form. In a format not exceeding A4 (210 x 297 mm) or folded into this format and in an appropriate scale, there must be regulations and drawings of the exhaust silencing system or components provided for approval by the applicant.

The checkmark shall be easily legible and indelible when the exhaust silencer system is installed in the vehicle. If a component is approved as part of more than one exhaust replacement silencing system, it may be marked with more than one approval number; In this case, there is no need to repeat the circle.

The exhaust replacement silencing system or its components shall be so designed, constructed and installed that the vehicle complies with the provisions of this Regulation under normal use, regardless of any vibrations to which it may be subjected.
