This International standard specifies optical testing methods for safety requirements for all safety glass materials in a road vehicle, regardless of the type of glass or other material from which they are composed.
For certain types of safety glass materials, it is not necessary to perform all the tests specified in this International Standard where the results can be predicted with certainty from a knowledge of the properties of the safety glass for the purpose of the test.
Mount the safety glass material at the designed tilt angle on a suitable tripod so that the observation is in the horizontal plane through the center of the target. The lightbox should be viewed in a dark or semi-dark room across each part of the area under investigation to detect the presence of any secondary images associated with the illuminated target. Rotate the safety glass material as many times as necessary to ensure the correct direction of vision is maintained. A monocular can be used for imaging.
The collimation telescope creates an image of a polar coordinate system with a bright spot at its center. In the focal plane of the observation telescope, a small dark spot with a diameter slightly larger than that of the projected bright spot is placed on the optical axis to cover the bright spot.
When a sample displaying a secondary image is placed between the telescope and the collimator, a second, less bright spot appears at some distance from the center of the polar coordinate system. Secondary image separation can be read as the distance between points seen through the observation telescope.
