Prior to testing, the test vehicle was inspected for completeness and system operability, including battery capacity and trunk closing functionality. The vehicle was then photographically documented as required by the NHTSA/OVSC Test. The owner's manual has been reviewed and the relevant trunk release information has been noted.
Rear trunk manual release system stationary vehicle tests were conducted with a passenger trapped in the luggage compartment with the lid closed. An assistant was there and ready to release the passenger if needed. The pod was evaluated by stacking it in accordance with vehicle label instructions, with all removable equipment provided by the manufacturer.
The procedure used consists of the following steps:
Identify ways for a person trapped in the trunk to escape from the compartment, eg. Pulling the T-arm release, rotating the fixed-lever release, pressing a button, etc.
For informational purposes, attach a linear force transducer to the aforementioned release mechanism and record the force that must be applied to get the trapped person to escape.
Verify that the release mechanism is visible on the darkened body S4.2(a) and identify the method used, e.g. phosphorescence or auxiliary lighting. It may take some time for the eyes to adjust to the dark environment in the luggage compartment. Take a photo of the light release mechanism if possible.
When the vehicle is stationary and the key is not in the ignition (means it is not empty)
