Volvo STD 422-0004 Painting Organic Surfaces - Rubber Material

The "Volvo STD 422-0004 Painting of organic surfaces" standard developed by the Volvo vehicle company describes a test method to determine the resistance of plastic or metallic components of vehicles to short-term contact with liquids.

Modern materials must meet ever more specific requirements to meet the ever-increasing demands of increasingly specific applications. When it comes to endurance testing, computer-aided simulations are increasingly available.

For example, various factors are examined in the field of environmental simulation. The most important factors include resistance to moisture, sunlight or ultraviolet (UV9) radiation. As a result of these effects, embrittlement or other effects may occur that significantly reduce the service life of the products. In addition, due to the decomposition of color pigments, plastics may become discolored and therefore lead to complaints All these effects are controlled in advanced laboratories through external weather conditions or accelerated artificial aging.

The Volvo STD 422-0004 standard is compatible with the “ISO 3865:2020 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Test methods for staining in contact with organic material” standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), with a few exceptions. On the other hand, this standard has replaced the Volvo STD 102-8131 standard.

When vulcanized rubber comes into contact with paint or varnish, plastic, rubber and similar organic substances under heat, pressure and light conditions, stains may form on the surface in contact with the rubber, on the surface adjacent to the rubber or on the surface of the organic material covering the rubber. Additionally, in the presence of water, the materials that make up rubber can leach and cause staining of surfaces that the water subsequently comes into contact with.

This standard includes the following four methods for determining the effect of rubber on organic surfaces:

  • Method A Determination of contact and migration staining. The rubber to be tested is brought into direct contact with the specified organic material and then exposed to heat or artificial light.
  • Method B Determination of extraction staining. The rubber to be tested is then subjected to dripping distilled water flowing onto the specific organic material.
  • Method C Determination of penetration staining. A coating of light-colored organic material is applied to the rubber to be tested. To develop the stain, the exposed surface of the coating is subjected to the combined action of heat and irradiation from an artificial light source.
  • Evaluation of staining. The stain is evaluated qualitatively by visual inspection or quantitatively by comparison to gray scale or using a reflectance spectrometer.

Rubber test pieces shall be rectangular (circular test pieces are permitted for method A), cut from sheet of uniform thickness and preferably 2 mm plus/minus 0,2 mm thick. The minimum dimensions are as follows:

  • For Method A: 25 mm x 12 mm or Ø 25 mm
  • For Method B: 150 mm x 25 mm
  • For Method C: 25 mm x 12 mm

Test pieces can also be cut from finished products.

For methods A and B, metal or plastic panels must comply with the STD 1021-5211 standard and tests are initiated between 24 hours and 48 hours after conditioning.

The test method described in Volvo STD 422-0004 attempts to simulate service conditions through controlled accelerated testing, but because actual environmental conditions vary so much, it may not be possible to provide a direct correlation with actual part performance. However, comparative data is obtained. This test method is suitable for specification compliance testing, quality control and research and development studies.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services in accordance with the "Volvo STD 422-0004 Painting of organic surfaces - Rubber material" standard, with a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
