FMVSS 218 Feasibility Study Test Standard for Upgrading Motorcycle Helmets

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 108 describes in great detail the requirements for "DOT" certification of all helmets sold in the United States for use by motorcyclists. It encourages not to use products sold as helmets that do not meet the minimum DOT certification standards.

FMVSS 218 Test Procedures

Pulse Attenuation, when a pulse attenuation test is performed, all of the following requirements must be met:

  • Peak accelerations should not exceed 400 g;
  • Accelerations exceeding 200 g may not exceed 2,0 milliseconds (ms) cumulative time;
  • Accelerations exceeding 150 g may not exceed 4.0 milliseconds (ms) cumulative time.

Penetration, when performing a penetration test, the striker must not touch the surface of the test headform.

When the retention system is properly tested; The adjustable portion of the retention system tester must not move more than 2,5 cm measured between the front and test load positions, while the retention system or its components will withstand the specified loads without breaking.

Where retention systems consist of components that can be connected independently of securing the complete assembly, each such component must independently meet the retention system requirements.
