FMVSS 223 Rear Impact Protection Test Standard

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 223 specifies requirements for rear-end collision protections for trailers and semi-trailers. The purpose of this standard is to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by light-duty vehicles striking the rear end of trailers and semi-trailers.

It specifies the strength requirements as well as the test procedures that NHTSA will use to determine compliance with the standard. The protection can be tested for suitability when installed in an off-vehicle "test fixture" or a complete vehicle. The equipment standard also requires the shield manufacturer to provide instructions on the correct installation of the shield. The final rule also specifies the requirements to ensure energy absorption by the guards.
