Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 224 is required for most new trailers and semitrailers weighing 4,536 kilograms (kg) (10.000 pounds (lbs)) or more. It must be equipped with a rear impact protection that meets the equipment standard. The requirements for the location of the guard relative to the rear end of the trailer are also specified in the vehicle standard.
The vehicle standard also requires that the guard be mounted on a trailer or semi-trailer in accordance with the guard manufacturer's instructions. The final rule also specifies the requirements to ensure energy absorption by the guards.
