ECE R87 Motor Vehicle, Standard Test Method for Approval of Daytime Running Lamps

The ECE R87 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the approval of daytime running lamps for motor vehicles. This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of such lamps.

Daytime running light refers to a forward facing light that is used to make the vehicle more visible when driving during the day. These lamps may differ according to the characteristics of the optical system such as intensity levels, light distribution angles, light source category and light source module.

The application for approval is made by the manufacturer or its duly authorized representative. During the application, information defining the type of lamp and diagrams showing geometrically the positions where it can be mounted on the vehicle must be submitted to the technical service responsible for carrying out the approval tests.

In addition, if filament lamps are foreseen, the criteria in regulation 37 must be complied with, and if LED light sources are foreseen, the criteria in regulation 128 must be complied with. In the meantime, two lamp samples should be delivered to the technical service for testing.
