EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R39 standard. The ECE R39 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the approval of motor vehicles on speedometer equipment and placement.
This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of vehicles, including the installation of speedometer and odometer equipment.
The application for approval of a vehicle type regarding speedometer and odometer equipment, including its installation, is made by the manufacturer or its authorized representative. An explanation of the vehicle type is made with the application and an unloaded vehicle of the vehicle type to be approved is submitted to the technical service that performs the approval tests.
The vehicle to be approved must be fitted with a speedometer and odometer in accordance with the requirements of this technical regulation. The speedometer must be placed in the driver's direct field of view and be clearly legible both day and night. Also, the speed range shown must be wide enough to include the maximum speed of this vehicle type.
Speed values on the speedometer display should be indicated in intervals not exceeding 200 km/h unless the vehicle's top speed does not exceed 20 km/h. If it exceeds 200 km/h, the speed values must be displayed at intervals not exceeding 30 km/h.
Test methods to determine the accuracy of speedometer equipment are included in this regulation. The stated speed must not be lower than the actual speed of the vehicle.
By the way, for vehicles sold in countries where miles are used as units of speed, the odometer must be marked as miles.
