This specification covers the performance requirements to be used for a protected metallized coating in an outdoor lighting application. The metallized coating is created using Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD); that is, vacuum evaporation, sputter deposition, arc vapor deposition, etc. The coating system may include a combination of base coat, metallic layer, protective topcoat and colored topcoat.
GMW 17572 Standard Applicability
Typical applications are exterior lighting reflectors, frames and decorative components protected by a lens within an assembly.
Coating approval according to this specification is system specific; i.e. substrate, pre-treatment, base coat if needed for Polyester Cast Molding Compound (BMC) or metallic substrate, metallic layer and protective topcoat or colored topcoat. The following describes the system approval guide for each coating type.
The metallic layer and in-chamber protective topcoat Hexamethyldisiloxane is not (HMDSO) material approved, only approved by Approved Paint on Plastics Systems (APOPS) and/or Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) testing.
According to GMW18024, color topcoat approval is required for each colored shade on a single substrate and metallization process. The surface must be certified to the appropriate GM material specification.
APOPS Approvals will be retained in the GM Materials Approved Source List (GMMASL), which lists approved combinations of substrate, cleaning, priming and finishing.
