VDA 232-101 Global Automotive Declarable Substance List - GADSL

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing services within the scope of VDA 232-101 standard. This part of the standard provides a definitive list of items that require declarations in order to minimize individual requirements and enable cost-effective management of declaration application throughout the complex supply chain.

VDA 232-101 Global Automotive Declarable Substance List - GADSL

The use of certain substances in vehicle parts can be a risk factor for human health and the environment. Exchange of information throughout the vehicle supply chain helps manage these potential risks while meeting customer requirements. GADSL is used to foster greater dialogue and collaboration throughout the supply chain about the benefits and potential risks of certain substances or groups of substances in a given use in vehicle parts/materials. However, the declaration of a substance does not mean that the substance is prohibited from use in vehicle parts or that it will be discontinued. Any declaration process using GADSL must adhere to the framework formulated in this preface.

The main goals of automotive product development include continuous improvements in quality, safety and reduction of environmental impact throughout the vehicle lifecycle. Whenever possible, these goals should be achieved in an efficient, cost-effective way to optimize consumer value. Many construction, operating and processing materials are used in the automotive production chain, and their selection and correct use can have a significant impact on these goals.

To achieve these goals, a continuous flow of dialogue and information has been established within the global automotive supply chain, including automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), stage suppliers and materials suppliers, called the Global Automotive Stakeholder Group (GASG). Early information and dialogue throughout the supply chain will help facilitate compliance with current and future regulations as well as consider customer requirements to ensure sustainable products. Optimized handling of the relevant information flow can help OEMs meet current and anticipated reporting requirements in a consistent, understandable and efficient manner.

The GASG organization consists of three regions: America, Europe/Africa/Middle East and Asia/Pacific. Regional membership and participation is open to all stakeholders in the automotive supply chain. Each of the three districts appoints six members to sit on the governing body, called the GASG's Board of Directors (SC). The SC meets once or more per year in its prerogative to decide on GADSL and to provide a transparent and open process for decision making.

The product of the GASG dialogue is the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List (GADSL). GADSL covers the declaration of certain information about relevant substances (regulated, envisaged or - by consensus within GASG SC - scientifically proven that their presence can pose a significant risk to human health and/or the environment). Parts and materials supplied to OEMs by the supply chain. The information relates to the use of these parts or materials in the manufacture of a vehicle, and to the reuse or waste disposal of the vehicle.

The purpose of GADSL is to become a company-specific list for parts composition declaration in the automotive industry. It provides a precise list of items that require declaration in order to minimize individual requirements and enable cost-effective management of declaration application throughout the complex supply chain. Scope includes declarable items in the information flow regarding parts and materials supplied along the automotive value chain from production to end-of-life. GADSL covers only items expected to be found in a material or part that remains on the vehicle or part at the point of sale. This approach is a voluntary industry initiative designed to enable integrated, responsible and sustainable product development by OEMs and their supply chains.
