This test method is mainly used for organic coated interior plastic materials that are prone to contamination by sunscreen and insect repellent due to contact with human skin. The test method is also used for organic coated metals.
The materials used in the interior of the vehicles need a protective coating to make them look new. This includes protection against sun exposure and perspiration, and sunscreen and insect repellent transferred from human skin to vehicle surfaces. A series of durability tests are conducted to help ensure that a vehicle's carpet, leather and fabric seat upholstery, wood and metal upholstery, plastics and other materials are less subject to fading, discoloration, or premature wear from these and other substances.
In advanced laboratories, durability and resistance tests to natural and artificial elements are carried out on visible and invisible materials in the vehicle. The GMW 14445 sunscreen and insect repellent resistance test is applied to test how well protective coatings on the dashboard, steering wheel or upholstery resist sunscreen and chemical compounds. To test material durability in heat and ultraviolet light, samples are placed under artificial light for 2-6 weeks before analysis. The simulated ultraviolet light speeds up the test considerably. However, natural sunlight testing is required to absolutely confirm durability.
