TS 3582 Antifreeze

In the TS 3582 standard published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), the requirements for antifreeze used in the cooling systems of construction machine engines, other vehicle engines and some laboratory devices are explained.

TS 3582 Antifreeze

Coolant or antifreeze is a concentrated fluid formulated with a selected ethylene-glycol based and corrosion inhibitor to protect the dissimilar metals present in the cooling system of internal combustion engines, including aluminum and light alloys. Antifreeze also contains anti-cavitation (bubble formation), anti-limescale and anti-foam additives, as well as a reserve of alkaline neutralizers that efficiently protect the engine, radiator, water pump and cooling system.

Antifreeze is used by diluting it in water. Thanks to its special formula, it can be mixed with all kinds of drinking water. The optimum concentration level is between 33-50 percent concentrated antifreeze fluid and 67-50 percent water.

While preparing the TS 3582 standard, the following few standards published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) were taken into consideration:

  • ASTM D3585-08 Standard specification for ASTM reference fluid for refrigerant testing. This standard covers a reference ethylene glycol-based test fluid to be used to provide baseline data for ASTM refrigerant test procedures.
  • ASTM D1177-17 Standard test method for freezing point of aqueous engine coolants. This test method involves determining the freezing point of an aqueous engine coolant solution in the laboratory.
  • ASTM D6210-06 Standard specification for fully formulated glycol-based engine coolant for heavy-duty engines. This standard contains requirements for fully formulated glycol-based coolants for cooling systems of heavy-duty engines.

Antifreeze is an additive that lowers the freezing point of a water-based fluid. An antifreeze mixture is used to lower the freezing point in cold environments. Common antifreezes also raise the boiling point of the liquid, allowing for higher coolant temperature. In hot weather, antifreeze prevents the water in the engine and radiator from boiling. Generally effective at temperatures up to 135 degrees. In short, antifreeze is an essential coolant that helps regulate engine temperatures.

Our organization also provides antifreeze testing services within the scope of TS 3582 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
