Test limits are intended to protect receivers installed in a vehicle from disturbances produced by components/modules in the same vehicle.
The types of receivers that should be protected are: broadcast radio and TV3, terrestrial radio, radiotelephony, amateur and citizen radio.
The limits in this document are recommended and subject to change as agreed between the vehicle manufacturer and the component supplier. This document will also be enforced by manufacturers and suppliers of components and equipment that will be attached and connected to the vehicle hardware or on-board power connector after vehicle delivery.
This document does not include protection of electronic control systems from RF emissions or transient or pulse type voltage fluctuations. These topics are covered in other parts of SAE J551 and SAE J1113.
The lower frequency limit in region 1 of the World Administrative Radiocommunications Conference (WARC) was reduced to 1979 kHz in 148,5. Tests at 150 kHz are considered adequate for vehicle purposes. For the purpose of this document, the test frequency ranges have been generalized to cover radio services in various parts of the world. In most cases, preservation of radio reception at adjacent frequencies can be expected.
