Designed by Volvo, a Swedish multinational luxury vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Gothenburg, the Volvo VCS 1027, 1449 standard serves as a general-purpose atmospheric corrosion test and applies to a wide variety of materials, coatings and material interactions. This standard is primarily designed to allow assessment of the corrosion resistance of metals in environments where chloride ions, such as sodium chloride from a marine source or de-icing salt on winter roads, have adverse effects.

Volvo VCS 1027 - 1449 Accelerated Cyclic Corrosion Test

The test method described is cyclical, meaning test samples are exposed to climates that change over time. During testing, samples are placed in a closed chamber and exposed to changing climatic conditions.

The first 5 days consist of the following 3 parts repeating cycles:

  • First, it is exposed to a wet climate with not less than 6 percent relative humidity at plus 95 degrees Celsius for 25 hours by intermittent exposure to salt solution;
  • This is followed by a transition to 50 hours of climate control plus 70 degrees and 2,5 percent relative humidity;
  • Finally, it is exposed to a stable climate of plus 15,5 degrees and 50 percent relative humidity for 70 hours.

It is exposed to a constant 2 degree climate and 48 percent relative humidity for 50 hours for the last 70 days. This total 7-day test cycle has been completed. The number of loop iterations, and therefore the test time, is variable. This test method is also often referred to as cyclic corrosion testing.

Cyclic corrosion testing aims to produce failures that are representative of conditions found in outdoor corrosive environments. These tests expose samples to a range of different environments in an iterative cycle. Simple exposures such as prohesion can consist of cycling between salt fog and dry conditions. Prohesion is a cyclic accelerated corrosion test method. This test correlates more closely with prolonged natural exposure than conventional salt spray or moisture/sulfur dioxide tests.
