GMW 3217 Standard Test Method for Ravel Resistance

This procedure is used to determine the tear resistance of an automotive seat fabric during seat cover fabrication and during normal vehicle life. This test is recommended for non-laminated or laminated woven fabrics up to 5 mm thick.

While the ends of a test specimen are held rigidly, a crease forms in the center of the test specimen and a predetermined load is applied to the crease. Under these conditions, the test specimen ends are rotated in opposite planar directions. The extent to which the test specimen is opened is then evaluated.

Fabrics with a laminate thickness greater than 5 mm cannot be evaluated using this test method. However, clean and neatly cut test specimens of excess laminate thickness are acceptable.
