GMW 16005 Adhesion Standard for Modular, Encapsulated Glass Assemblies

This standard aims to cover the adhesion performance of encapsulation material (for Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Reaction Injection Molded (RIM), Ethylene Propylene Diene (EPDM), Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE)) to glass in a modular glass assembly.

Applications subject to this performance requirement are fixed encapsulated glazing such as automotive side windows.

Mosque; State-of-the-art adhesive formulations are available for bonding to glass and many other substrates, including plastics, metals and rubbers. These compounds are available as epoxies, silicones, polyurethanes, polysulfides, cyanoacrylates and UV/LED curing systems. These components are designed to provide the best performance even when exposed to harsh conditions.

The compounds are designed to adhere well to different types of glass such as borosilicate, fused quartz, glass ceramic and glass fiber substrates. Products exhibit exceptional long-term durability even when exposed to hot, cold and humid environments.

Surface Preparation of Glass

Typically, degreasing the substrates will help increase their bond strength. However, mechanical etching can also be done using sandpaper or sandblasting, depending on the final strength required. A combination of cleaning and mechanical wear can also be used for best results. Please note that mechanical etching is not recommended as it can affect the light transmission properties of the optical glass.
