GMW 16215 Weld Acceptance Criteria and Repair Procedures

EUROLAB Laboratory provides accredited testing and conformity assessment services within the scope of GMW 16215 standard. This standard applies to resistance projection welded steel nuts, studs, cages and other parts containing solids.

GMW 16215 Weld Acceptance Criteria and Repair Procedures

GMW 16215 Standard Scope

This standard covers solid projections, the welded resistance projection, on automotive products for which GM is responsible for creating or approving the product design. This specification provides acceptance criteria for steel nuts, studs, cages and other parts.

GMW 16215 Applicability

The criteria set in this specification are referenced in a weld drawing. Deviation from any weld criteria provided in this standard should be specified in a weld drawing or other product, engineering design document.

Use of GMW 16215

Weld fasteners are considered satisfactory when they meet the expected design service loads and meet functional performance requirements. The evaluation criteria in this document are established as the basis for manufacturing acceptance of welded products and are the same for all welds, regardless of service load. Also, welds identified as inconsistent can often contribute to the mechanical properties and integrity of the welded product. Application of this specification for other uses, such as post-impact weld quality assessment, may result in erroneous results.

GMW 16215 General Acceptance Criteria

Presence and Location

A projection weld fastener that is missing or outside the position tolerance specified in the assembly documentation is inconsistent.

Placement

Weld fasteners and cages (excluding ring rib fasteners) should be positioned so that the gap between the base of the fastener and the mating part is no more than 0,3 mm or 30% of the protruding height before welding. whichever is less. When a gap exceeding this value is detected, the welding process should be adjusted. Setting is not a criterion for sources to be inconsistent.
