The test method is intended to use only one transmission mode. A coaxial enclosure of the specified dimensions is used. Inside the enclosure is a fixed impedance and a plate in series with the center conductor. The gasket is placed between this plate and the housing and compressed with fasteners. The input signal is injected into the input connector through the impedance and seal and travels in a return path along the walls of the armature. There is a return current flowing through this seal and a voltage drop across it.

The magnitude of the current is calculated using the input power and impedance. The voltage drop across the gasket is obtained by measurement. These terms are used to calculate the transfer impedance of the sealed interface. This value can be expressed in dB of attenuation, or decreasing resistance per unit length indicates improved shielding properties.
