IEC 61851 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Test Standard

IEC 61851 defines the EMC requirements for any onboard component or equipment of such systems used to supply or charge electric vehicles with electrical power via conductive power transmission (CPT) with rated input voltage according to IEC.

IEC 61851 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Test Standard

IEC 61851 covers non-vehicle charging equipment for mode 1, mode 2, mode 3 and mode 4 charging as defined. Bidirectional power flow requirements are not covered in this document.

Matters covered in this standard are:

  • Characteristics and operating conditions of DC EV supply equipment;
  • Characteristics of the connection between the DC EV supply equipment and the EV;
  • Electrical safety requirements for DC EV supply equipment.

Additional requirements may apply for equipment designed for specific environments or conditions, such as:

  • DC EV supply equipment located in hazardous areas where flammable gas or vapor and flammable materials, fuels or other flammable or explosive materials are present;
  • DC EV supply equipment designed for installation at an altitude of more than 2000 m;
  • DC EV supply equipment intended for use on ships.

Requirements for electrical devices and components used in DC EV supply equipment are not included in this document and are covered by specific product standards.
