ISO 16750-1 Road Vehicles - Environmental Conditions and Tests for Electrical and Electronic Equipment

This part of the ISO 16750 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) applies to electrical and electronic systems/components for vehicles. Describes potential environmental stresses and specifies recommended tests and requirements for the specific mounting location on/in the vehicle.

ISO 16750-1 Road Vehicles - Environmental Conditions and Tests for Electrical and Electronic Equipment

This document contains definitions and general notes. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is not covered by the ISO 16750 series.

The concept of the ISO 16750 series is to assist the user in systematically identifying and/or applying a set of internationally accepted environmental conditions, testing and operating requirements based on the actual environment in which the equipment will be operated and to which it will be exposed. The following environmental factors were considered in the development of this document:

World geography and climate: Road vehicles are owned and operated in almost all land regions of the Earth. Therefore, significant changes in environmental conditions resulting from the climatic environment, including diurnal and seasonal cycles, can be expected. Worldwide ranges in atmospheric conditions are considered, including temperature, humidity, precipitation and dust, pollution and altitude.

Vehicle usage conditions and operating modes: The environmental conditions in and on the vehicle vary significantly with road quality, road surface type, road topography, vehicle use (eg commuting, towing, cargo handling, etc.) and driving habits. Storage, starting, driving, stopping etc. operating modes are taken into account.

Storage, starting, driving, stopping etc. operating modes are taken into account.

Equipment life cycle: Electrical and electronic equipment is also resistant to environmental conditions experienced during production, transportation, handling, storage, vehicle assembly and vehicle maintenance and repair. Such conditions and tests (eg drop test) are covered by the ISO 16750 series.

Vehicle supply voltage: The supply voltage varies with vehicle use, operating mode, electrical distribution system design and even climatic conditions. Malfunctions can occur in the vehicle electrical system, such as interruptions in the surge alternator and connection systems. Such conditions are covered by the ISO 16750 series.

It is desirable for the automaker to group different environmental load types and levels into a reasonable set of standard requirements. This strategy makes it possible to move systems/components from one car project to another. Also, the exact requirement levels are often unknown when designing a component for a future car concept. Expected environmental loads are often compiled from other car concepts with similar conditions.

Grouping is normally done by mounting location, but determining the correct number of different mounting locations and associated load profiles is difficult because there is a conflict of purpose between having only a few requirement classes and adapting to the requirement levels for each application. This is because environmental loads do not depend only on the mounting location. There are other important factors that affect stress levels for systems/components. For example, body styles, driveline concepts or package densities can create completely different levels of requirements for devices installed in different vehicles in nearly the same location.
