JIS D 0203 Moisture, Rain and Spray Test Method for Automotive Parts

JIS-D-0203 testing is an ingress protection testing standard published by the Japanese Standards Association. This automotive ingress protection test standard applies to a range of parts. The scope of this IP Code test specifies moisture proof and waterproof methods for automotive parts.

JIS D 0203 Moisture, Rain and Spray Test Method for Automotive Parts

JIS D 0203 testing labs must pass auto parts through a rigorous test plan that includes various ingress protection tests. This test of the waterproofing of the enclosures includes the following tests.

M1 – Moisture Test, this test is to investigate the function of parts exposed to moisture. The duration of this test is eight hours.

M2 – Humidity Test, It is a test to determine the function of parts exposed to high temperature and humidity. The duration of this test is one hour.

Rain Test

The rain test simulates raindrops dripping onto a unit. This part of the JIS 0203 enclosure test standard contains two test protocols.

R1 – Rain Test

This test investigates the function of the parts exposed to the droplets. The duration of this test is 10 minutes. The water temperature should be 32 degrees Celsius.

R2 – Rain Test

This ingress protection test determines the function of parts exposed to indirect wind and rain or spray. The duration of this test is 10 minutes. The water temperature should be 60 degrees Celsius.

Spray Test

The spray test is an ingress protection test in which special nozzles are used to spray water into a unit from a specified distance and at a specified flow rate. JIS D 0203 test labs must follow two test protocols when completing the spray test.

S1 – Spray Test

The spray test in this test is to investigate the function of parts that are directly exposed to wind and rain or spray. The duration of this test is 30 minutes. The flow of the water spray is a minimum of 24,5 liters per minute.

S2 – Spray Test

This spray test is to investigate the function of parts exposed to heavy water spray. The duration of this test is one hour. The flow of the water spray is a minimum of 39,2 liters per minute.

Immersion Test

The immersion test, also called the immersion test, has three parts in the JIS D 0203 ingress protection test. Below are details of each of these three immersion tests.

D1 – Immersion Test

This IP Code test is to investigate the function of parts that are occasionally submerged in water. The duration of this test is five minutes. In this JIS immersion test, the unit is immersed up to its upper surface.

D2 – Immersion Test

This waterproof housing test determines the function of parts that are constantly submerged in water or parts that are designed to be completely waterproof. The duration of this test is 10 minutes. In this automotive ingress protection test, the unit is immersed in water 100 millimeters from its top surface. The temperature difference between the unit and the water is 30 degrees Celsius.

D3 – Immersion Test

This drop test is designed to investigate the waterproof function of parts used in special applications. The duration of this test is 20 minutes. In this JIS D 0203 immersion test, the unit is immersed in water 100 meters from its top surface. The temperature difference between the unit and the water is 50 degrees Celsius.
