ECE R-91 Standard Test for Approval of Side Marker Lamps for Motor Vehicles and Trailers

This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of side marker lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers.

This regulation applies to daytime running lights used in vehicles of the following categories:

• Vehicles of category M (at least four-wheeled, motorized and passenger-carrying vehicles);
• N category vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, motorized and used for freight transport);
• Vehicles of category O (non-motorized vehicles with less than four wheels, towed by a motor vehicle and used for the transport of goods);
• T category vehicles (agricultural and forestry tractors);

Side marker lamp is a lamp used to show the presence of the vehicle when viewed from the side. These lamps differ from each other in terms of the properties of the optical system such as intensity levels, light distribution angles, light source category and light source module.

The application for approval is made by the company that owns the trade name or trademark or its approved representative. With the application, for each type of side marker lamp, technical drawings that will allow the identification of the lamp type and geometric diagrams showing in which positions they can be mounted on the vehicle must be submitted to the technical service.
