This European Standard applies to lead acid batteries with a rated voltage of 12 V, used primarily as power sources for starting internal combustion engines (ICE), lighting and also for auxiliary equipment of vehicles with internal combustion engines.
These batteries are often called "starter batteries". Batteries with a nominal voltage of 6 V are also covered by this standard. For 6V batteries, all referenced voltages need to be divided by two. Batteries covered by this standard are used in microcycle applications, which can also be called Start-Stop (or Stop-Start, idle-stop system, micro hybrid or idle stop-start) applications in vehicles.
In cars with this special capability, the internal combustion engine is turned off during the vehicle's complete stop, idling at low speed, or idling, without the need for vehicle movement to be supported by the internal combustion engine. During the stages when the engine is stopped, most of the electrical and electronic parts of the car must be fed from the battery without the support of the alternator. Also in most cases an additional regenerative braking (recovery or renewal of braking energy) function is installed.
Batteries in these applications are stressed in a completely different way compared to conventional starter batteries. Besides these additional features, these batteries must start the internal combustion engine in standard operating mode with the support of the alternator when the internal combustion engine is started and support lighting as well as auxiliary functions. All batteries in this scope must fulfill the basic functions tested within the scope of EN 50342-1 application.
