Friction is the condition of permanent damage to the coating. Marring, on the other hand, is the situation where there is no breakage or penetration in the coating, only visible grooving or scratching can be detected. This condition may or may not be permanent.
The GMW 14130 standard applies to plastic films, vinyl, leather and similar materials used in automotive interior applications.
Scratches and mar are types of mechanical surface damage that occur during normal use and handling, shipping or assembly activities. Marring or friction is defined as the resistance to penetration by an edge or ridge on a second body moving across the surface of a solid body and is usually associated with a single occurrence on the sample surface.
Friction involves some deformation, but can also include material cracking, peeling, and removal. In contrast, marring describes relatively fine surface scratches characterized by generally shallow damage, often scattered over a relatively large area, which typically degrades the appearance of the surface coating. It is more convenient to think of marring resistance as a surface property, whereas scratch or abrasion resistance includes the body of the material.
For laboratory friction and marring tests, a stylus with a given geometry is drawn along the sample surface at a known speed and with a known force. The purpose of most scratch or marring resistance studies is to determine the behavior of the material under certain test conditions, to establish a relative ranking of similar materials, or to determine the failure limit of a surface coating.
