Two methods are specified for calibrating electromagnetic fields:

  • A method of substitution and
  • A closed loop method.

The valid frequency range for the tests is 0,1 MHz to 18 000 MHz. Testing over the full frequency range may require different field generating devices, but this does not mean that overlapping frequency ranges should be tested.

The test consists of generating radiated electromagnetic fields using antenna sets with radio frequency (RF) sources capable of producing the desired field strength in the range of test frequencies. Electric fields (E-fields) are measured using probes that are small for wavelength (/10) to ensure specified test levels are achieved. The operation of the tested vehicle is usually monitored by fiber optic couplers to reduce test error.
