This SAE Standard provides minimum requirements for an automotive or RV, seven-position, self-draining trailer tow connector interface. The procedures contained in this standard are intended to cover test methods, design, and performance requirements for the electrical interface of the seven-position trailer tow connector in low-voltage (0 to 20) road vehicle applications.
A connector or vehicle jack manufactured in accordance with this Recommended Practice may optionally visually display the following designation in Arial font on its exterior: Any party providing such identification warrants that the connector or tool port complies with all mandatory requirements of this SAE Standard; and agrees to indemnify and indemnify SAE from any liability for any non-compliance and any resulting injury or damage.
This standard applies to connectors used with trailer harnesses for the lighting and braking functions of a trailer and specifies the electrical and mechanical requirements for the connectors.
The SAE J2863 standard covers both seven-pin and four-pin connectors commonly used for towing trailers in North America.
