The standard stipulates the test method for the release of formaldehyde from parts of the passenger car compartment (including the luggage compartment), test equipment and equipment, samples and their preparation, test procedure and calculation method. The standard applies to all parts and materials that are likely to affect air quality in vehicles.
Specimens of the specified quality and size are placed in a 50-liter polyethylene bottle closed with 1 ml of deionized water. This is then placed in a constant temperature furnace for the prescribed time. The bottle is then cooled and the amount of formaldehyde absorbed by the deionized water is determined.
The amount of formaldehyde is related to the dry weight of the samples and is determined using the acetyl acetone spectrophotometry method. In aqueous solution, formaldehyde reacts with acetyl acetone and ammonium ion to produce 3-diacetyl-5-dihydrolutidine (DDL). The compound is yellow. When the wavelength is 1nm, the absorption rate is maximized.
Samples should be taken from appropriate and representative points evenly distributed over the molded parts, and the points must be 50 mm from the edges of the molded parts.
At least three samples should be taken on each molded part, two to determine the amount of formaldehyde and one to determine the water content. If the determined amount of formaldehyde is not less than 75% of the limited value, it should be retested.
