Volvo VCS 1029-54719 Standard Test Method for Adhesion, High Pressure Water Spray, Paints and Enamels

The method aims to simulate the stress and load that paint films are subjected to during high pressure cleaning. Flat test panels and small/large parts can be tested with this method.

The test object must be conditioned according to VCS 1021,19. Before testing adhesion, initial paint damage should be done on the test object by drawing two 0,5 mm lines using a scratching tool. The bottom width of the drawn line will be at least 0,4 mm. If the bottom width of the drawn line is less than 0,5 mm for an initial bottom width of 0,4, the drawing tool should be replaced. This can be checked using a magnifying glass or microscope.

Calculate or estimate the total test area if the width of the test object is less than 40mm. If the paint coating has been removed from the underlying layer or substrate but not completely released, this will also be considered a loss of adhesion.

The spray pattern of the nozzle is determined by measuring the length and width of the damage to the test panel from the spray and checking its appearance. For the spray pattern to be approved, it must lie between two continuous, 68,0 ± 5 mm long, minimum 2,5 mm wide, and 7,0 mm apart two parallel lines.
