LV 214-2 Automotive Grade Connectors, Function and Reliability Tests

As a logical continuation of a design guide (LV 215), five German automakers agreed in the 1990s on a working group test guide for automotive connectors, today referred to as LV 214 (or manufacturer-specific factory standard). It lays out test requirements describing automotive connectors.

In a total of 29 test groups, the LV214 defines electrical, climatic, mechanical and corrosive stress scenarios that a contact system must withstand. In addition, material and surface analysis, as well as dimensional testing, must be significantly validated. A prerequisite for acceptance of all tests and analyzes is that they are performed by an independent and accredited testing organization.

Within test groups, stresses such as vibration, salt spray, or moist heat alternate with property tests. The properties defined as evaluation criteria may relate to mechanical behavior (eg, insertion and retraction forces, conductor pulling force) or dimensional accuracy, but electrical volume resistance is also used here as the most important key variable.

Value with less absolute value and more, relative change compared to the first case is very significant. LV 214 details various methods for measuring contact resistance and detecting possible contact breakage.
