The ISO 20653 IP Code Test is applied to determine the degrees of protection (IP code) provided by the enclosures of electrical equipment of road vehicles.
The ISO 20653 test determines the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment in road vehicles against foreign objects. Foreign bodies are defined in ISO 20653 as dust, access and water. ISO 20653 complies with the International Code of Protection, also known as the IP Code, by having codes with two numbers followed by two optional letters. The first number in the IP Code indicates the degree of protection the enclosure provides against solid objects. The second number indicates the degree of protection against water.

Some examples of mounting positions specified in ISO-20653 include passenger compartment, engine compartment liner, engine bay exposed and endless mount. Specific testing requirements range from dripping water to splashing water to spraying water and high velocity water. The requirement of each device is determined by the mounting location.
