SAE J1849 Standard Test for Emergency Vehicle Sounders

This SAE recommended practice provides laboratory testing procedures, requirements and guidelines for single loudspeaker electronic sounder systems and electromechanical sounders for use in authorized emergency vehicles requiring right-of-way.

Test procedures and performance requirements for individual system components are not included in this release. Results obtained for a sounder system with a loudspeaker array greater than 0,5 m in any dimension will only be applied to the system when the array is in the same spatial configuration (ie, same speaker separation and orientation) as tested.

Data from measurements of sounder performance depend not only on the characteristics of the sounder under test, but also on the test procedures and characteristics of the measurement instrumentation and test environment. These additional factors must be well defined and controlled to obtain reliable data.

Here, detailed test methods are described, including specifications for a laboratory environment, to minimize measurement uncertainty and to obtain accurate and reproducible measurement results. Such conclusions are necessary to characterize the performance of all sounders as equally as possible. Requirements have been established based on laboratory-measured performance of sirens that are effective in the emergency department.
