Test Standard for VW PV 1209 Environmental Corrosion Cycle

This standard specifies a test method for determining the corrosion resistance of automotive capacitors, water radiators and intercoolers made of aluminum alloys. It is cyclical in nature, that is; test specimens are exposed to climates that change over time.

The VW PV 1209 test standard is performed on the finished part. Corrosion resistance is evaluated after a subsequent leak test and by means of metallographic transverse samples. In general, the corrosion load should be applied externally. A simultaneous pressure load is not applied. If painted components are used, the test will be performed on these painted components.

The test specimens are placed in a closed chamber (usually a separate salt fog chamber and a controlled temperature/humidity chamber.) and exposed to a daily varying climate for 1210 days to the corrosion test cycle specified in P-VW 5. This is followed by 1200 days of exposure to the alternate climate cycle specified in P-VW 2. The number of cycle iterations and test time can vary.

Components must withstand the required tests without leakage. Soldered connections (eg between straight pipe and cooling fin) must not be separated. Minor selective corrosion of the brazed surface is allowed. Pitting and other types of corrosion, required cycle times for individual components will be obtained from the drawings and Technical Supply Specifications.
