NES M0161 Fogging Test Method for Automotive Interiors

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of NES M0161 standard. The NES M0161 test describes two methods for determining the tendency of interior materials used in automobiles and other vehicles to either (a) form a light scattering residue (fog) on a glass surface or (b) form a measurable deposit (mass) on aluminum foil.

NES M0161 Fogging Test Method for Automotive Interiors

This standard applies to the measurement of fog condensation on glass or aluminum foil surfaces within the limits of test conditions. Fogging tests measure the tendency of plastic or elastomeric materials to volatilize substances that can condense and collect on other surfaces during use.

These tests provide 2 methods to evaluate the probability of a material to deposit a luminescent film on a glass surface (photometric method) or to deposit foreign matter on an aluminum foil surface (gravimetric method). The tests are used to evaluate materials to be used in automotive or other vehicle interiors.

The test sample is placed in a sealed beaker - the inner surface of the refrigerated beaker lid is either glass (for photometric method) or aluminum foil (for gravimetric method). The bottom of the beaker is placed in a controlled temperature oil bath for a specified period of time - typically 3 hours for the photometric method and 16 hours for the gravimetric method. For the photometric method, the gloss readings of the glass cover after pre-test and post-test conditioning are compared. For the gravimetric method, the weights of the test sample and the aluminum foil are compared before and immediately after the test.
