The effectiveness of the sleeve (SE ) is determined by measuring the difference in surface temperature of a plain black, single diameter ceramic cylinder with and without a standard diameter sleeve at the specified temperature, location, and distance from the radiant heat source.

It is the responsibility of the user of this document to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.

The temperature measurement range of this procedure is 121 to 482 °C. Sleeve length is limited to 30 cm ± 2 cm in length. The test distance is the shortest distance measured from the surface of the radiant heat source to the surface of the ceramic cylinder. Unless otherwise specified, the standard distance is 25 mm ± 2 mm and the cylinder position is parallel to and directly above the heat source. This procedure is performed under vibration-free static (passive) airflow. Do not adapt the temperature sequence as a thermal cycle.
