NFPA 1901 Automotive Fire Apparatus Test Standard

The NFPA 1901 test standard requires the pump manufacturer to certify and provide hydrostatic testing of 500 pounds per square inch (psi) gauge pressure of the pump body. The standard also requires that the entire inlet and discharge piping system be able to withstand a hydrostatic gauge pressure of 500 psi. Tank-to-pump and tank-fill lines are excluded from this requirement on the tank side of the valves in these lines.

NFPA 1901 Automotive Fire Apparatus Test Standard

The "Apparatus Pump System Certification" section of the 2009 edition required pumping tests to be performed at 100, 70, and 50 percent of rated capacity. Depending on the capacity rating, the highest net pump pressure of these tests was either 200 or 250 psi gauge pressure. The manufacturer's pre-delivery testing also requires a piping hydrostatic test at a gauge pressure of 250 psi.

It includes additional requirements for fire pumps capable of developing discharge pressures higher than the pressure for which they are hydrostatically tested. It also created a new requirement for pump manufacturers to establish a new rating for all fire pumps regarding discharge pressure. The new rating is the maximum discharge pressure capacity (MDPC) rating and is defined in the standard as the maximum allowable discharge gauge pressure at which the fire pump can be operated. If a pump's MDPC rating exceeds the hydrostatic test pressure, the pump manufacturer must submit the pump to a hydrodynamic test where the discharge pressure equals or exceeds the MDPC rating for at least five minutes. Hydrodynamic testing involves operating the pump in such a way that the pump discharge structure and connected pipes and valves are pressurized to the MDPC rating, while the suction pipes, suction valves, and suction structure of the pump are not subjected to this pressure. When hydrodynamic testing is required, the pump manufacturer must provide a certificate of completion for the hydrodynamic testing.
