ECE R-117 Standard Test for Approval of Tires for Rolling Noise Emissions

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R-117 standard. The ECE R-117 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the approval of tires in terms of rolling noise emissions.

This technical regulation contains uniform provisions regarding the approval of tires regarding rolling noise emissions and adhesion or rolling resistance on wet surfaces.

The regulation in question applies to new pneumatic tires of classes C1, C2 and C3 with regard to noise emissions, rolling resistance and adhesion performance on wet surfaces (wet adhesion).

However, the following types of tires do not apply:

• Tires designed and marked as a temporary use spare tire;
• Tires with a nominal rim diameter code less than 254 mm or greater than 635 mm;
• Tires designed for competitions;
• tires intended for installation on road vehicles of categories other than M, N and O;
• Tires equipped with additional equipment to improve traction characteristics (eg studded tyres);
• Tires with a speed rating of less than 80 km/h;
• tires designed to be fitted on vehicles registered before 1 October 1990;
• Professional off-road tires.

The application for approval of a tire type under this regulation is made by the tire manufacturer or its duly approved representative.

The performance characteristics to be evaluated for the tire type during approval tests are:

• Rolling noise emission level;
• The level of adhesion performance on wet surfaces;
• rolling resistance level;
• Snow performance level for a snow tire designed for use in severe snow conditions.
