SAE J1455 Tests

The SAE J1455 standard is a recommended series of tests for the automotive industry that characterizes the environmental performance and reliability requirements of electronic equipment designed for heavy-duty land and off-road vehicles.

SAE J1455 Tests

SAE J1455 is one of the most common testing standards for the automotive market and is considered essential for testing heavy trucks as well as both road and off-road vehicles. The scope of SAE J1455 testing covers all suitable stationary applications using components derived from this vehicle, as well as environments that affect the performance and reliability of electronic equipment designed for heavy-duty land and off-road vehicles. A few examples of such vehicles are road trucks, trailers, buses, construction equipment and agricultural equipment including tools.

In tests performed in accordance with SAE J1455 standards, components are tested for temperature, humidity, salt spray atmosphere, immersion and splash (Water, Chemicals and Oils), steam cleaning and pressure washing, mushroom, dust, sand and gravel bombardment, altitude, mechanical vibration, mechanical shock Various results are achieved by exposure to factors such as Most of the environmental conditions specified in SAE J1455 are simulated to real-world conditions. Often, combined exposure can have more serious consequences than exposing the part to one condition at a time.

For example, with regard to temperature and vibration, it can be concluded whether the design of the products and the installation site will be susceptible to simultaneous exposure to both temperature and vibration. Another example, with both high and low temperature exposure, humidity can be crucial as it relates to the sealing integrity of the electrical components tested. Water droplets from moisture will condense at high temperatures, possibly penetrating the seals. At low temperatures, water may freeze inside the component if the seal fails.

In general, SAE recommends that the toughest environmental tests (eg, shock and vibration) be run last. Temperature cycling is usually performed first to condition the test article to operate mechanically.

The factors evaluated according to this test protocol are listed in the table below.

Evaluated factors The test used
Temperature 1. Temperature cycle test
2. Thermal shock test
3. Thermal stress
Gender 1. Thermal humidity cycle
salt spray atmosphere 1. Salt spray (ASTM B117)
2. Immersion test (SAE J2721)
Exposure to chemicals and oils 1. High exposure splash test
2. Hazardous and mild to moderate splash test
Steam cleaning and pressure washing 1. Pressure washing tests
Mantar 1. Examining a test component inoculated with a fungal spore solution
2. Review of product material and component data sheets
dust and sand 1. Dust and sand tests
gravel bombardment 1. Crushing resistance of the surface coating (SAE J400)
Altitude 1. Thermal cycles at lower operating pressure
mechanical vibration 1. Sweeping sinus vibration tests
2. Random vibration test
3. Vehicle testing on test tracks
Mechanical shock 1. Drop test from transport
2. Transit drop test
3. Mounting hardware shock test
4. Impact shock test
Combined environmental test 1. A test that combines several environmental factors into a single test
General Heavy-duty truck electrical environment 1. Steady state electrical characteristic tests
2. Transient, noise and electrostatic characteristic tests for 12 and 24 V
3. Electromagnetic compatibility and interference tests

As a result, the SAE J1455 standard and its associated tests are one of the most successful test specifications for products associated with the automotive market. It is suitable for developing a test plan for both road and off-road vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.
