VW 13750 Surface Protection on Metal Parts - Standard Test for Surface Protection Types

All-metal jam nuts should always be treated with additional or integral lubricants. Non-metallic compression nuts can be treated with lubricant to ensure the defined functional properties.

The lubricant should not be hazardous to the user and should not emit an unpleasant odor during the fixing process. It should also be suitable for automatic squeezing. The ticks of nuts treated with protective coatings or lubricants should not deteriorate within 6 months of storage in weather-protected rooms. Storage temperature should be between -5°C and +40°C.

Electrolytically zinc plated or electrolytically zinc alloy plated parts can be post-treated in passivation solutions to increase corrosion resistance. Yellowish passivation, corresponding to the appearance of yellow chromating with Cr(VI), is not allowed.

If surface-protected parts are to be welded to each other or to other metal parts, the parts must be tested for weldability.

For screws, bolts, nuts and similar threaded parts and molded parts, more stringent testing requirements apply to the non-threaded areas as well as to the thread profile and shank. Details in terms of testing requirements are described in the relevant standards.
