SAE J1587 Test Protocol for Data Link Diagnosis

The SAE J1587 Protocol is an SAE standard submitted by a subcommittee to the Truck and Bus Electrical and Electronics Committee. The purpose of the protocol is to promote consistency between software in different electronic control units. The J1587 protocol should be used in conjunction with the SAE J1708 protocol, which describes the hardware and communication fundamentals. Together with the J1708, it is expected to reduce the cost and complexity for the development and maintenance of microcontroller devices in heavy-duty vehicles (trucks and buses).

SAE J1587 Test Protocol for Data Link Diagnosis

The J1587 test protocol defines the format of J1708 messages sent between microprocessor devices in heavy-duty vehicles. It also supports communication with external devices connected to the bus.

J1587 is an application layer and is used together with the physical layer, J1708. J1587 describes a message format and defines parameters. A J1587 message consists of MID, PID, data bytes, and a checksum. The length of the J1587 message is limited to 1708 bytes according to J21. J1587 allows sending messages longer than 21 bytes using a connection-oriented transport service (COTS).
