EN 12817 Test for LPG Equipment and Accessories

Periodic inspection and requalification regimes for above-ground LPG tanks up to (inclusive) 13 m3 have been developed in various countries, ranging from those defined by requalification regimes achieved by various methods to varying inspection periods. This standard for periodic inspection and requalification is based on the laws and codes of practice of European countries and industry codes of practice. In addition, the use of LPG in different applications has encouraged the industry to approach routine periodic inspection and requalification requirements in different ways for each application.

This European Standard requires the use of substances and procedures that can be harmful to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It expresses technical conformity and does not relieve the user from legal obligations related to health and safety at any stage.

In the preparation of this European Standard it was assumed that the application of its provisions is entrusted to suitably qualified and experienced persons.

Appropriate safety precautions shall be taken during decommissioning, commissioning and inspection/requalification of a tank and its connections.

Any unsafe condition observed by an authorized person at the location of an LPG storage tank will be reported to the person responsible for the safe operation of the tank/site and appropriate action will be taken.

Any leak detected from the tank or its connections shall be immediately reported to the person responsible for the safe operation of the tank. The necessary actions to secure a tank or its equipment shall be carried out by a competent person.

The maximum period between requalifications should normally not be more than 20 years and should be shortened if conditions are not satisfactory.

Do not remove a relief valve from a pressure relief valve manifold or controller while the tank is under pressure unless a serviceable replacement is available for immediate installation. Do not remove a relief valve mounted on a tank under pressure unless the type and construction of the controller has been identified and the manufacturer's instructions for safe removal have been followed. A controller should include positive means of confirming the controller closure before the relief valve is screwed into an otherwise dangerous stage.
