SAE J1772 SAE J1772 Electric Vehicle Components Test Standard

SAE J1772 (IEC 62196 Type 1), also known as J plug, is a North American standard for electrical connectors for electric vehicles maintained by SAE International and its official name is "SAE Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J1772, SAE Electric Vehicle Conductor Charger". It covers general physical, electrical, communication protocol and performance requirements for electric vehicle conductor charging system and coupler. The aim is to define a common EV conductor charging system architecture, including operational requirements and functional and dimensional requirements for the vehicle input and mating connector.

The revised SAE J1772 standard provides design and safety guidelines for charging controls and connectors and serves as a consensus standard for both AC and DC charging stations. For the US market, new "Combo" systems should be evaluated against a combination of UL-2202 and UL-Subject-2594, with both AC and DC CCID circuits evaluated against UL-2231-1/-2.
