SAE J1939 OBD Communications Compliance Test Standard for Heavy Duty Components and Vehicles

This SAE J1939 standard describes tests, methods, and results for verifying diagnostic communication from a non-vehicle diagnostic tool (ie scan tool) to a vehicle or component. SAE members created this document to serve as a guide for heavy-duty engines used in medium and heavy-duty vehicles to test for compliance with other requirements for ARB and emissions-related in-vehicle diagnostic (OBD) functions.

SAE J1939-82 Compliance describes compliance tests and procedures to verify that an SAE J1939 ECU will operate correctly on an SAE J1939 network. The purpose of these compliance procedures is to generate one or more test documents outlining the tests required to ensure that an ECU designed to operate as a node in an SAE J1939 network does so correctly. SAE does not endorse devices, and these tests and their results do not imply SAE approval of a particular device. These tests are offered by the manufacturer of a device to enable testing of a device to determine self-compatibility. The manufacturer may use his record of which procedures have been successfully executed to demonstrate the level of compliance with SAE J1939.
