FORD WSS-M28P1-B1/B7 Laminated, Tempered and Polycarbonate Coated Glass Applications for Vehicles

The Ford WSS-M28P1 standard, developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) within the scope of engineering material specifications, describes the performance requirements of laminated, tempered and polycarbonate coated glasses for windshields, side windows and all other glass applications.

FORD WSS-M28P1-B1/B7 Laminated, Tempered and Polycarbonate Coated Glass Applications for Vehicles

This standard consists of the following parts:

  • WSS-M28P1-B1 Glass for windshields, performance, safety, float laminated
  • WSS-M28P1-B2 Laminated for side window and rear windows
  • WSS-M28P1-B3 Laminated for all other glass applications
  • WSS-M28P1-B4 Tempered for side glass and rear tires
  • WSS-M28P1-B5 Tempered for all other glass applications
  • WSS-M28P1-B6 Polycarbonate (PC) coated for side window and rear tires
  • WSS-M28P1-B7 Polycarbonate (PC) coated for all other glass applications

Essentially, this standard covers the following product types:

  • B1 Laminated products for windshields.
  • B2 Laminated products used in areas such as side windows and backlighting.
  • B3 Laminated products used anywhere in driver visibility, such as the roof window or behind the “B” pillar on trucks, are not a cause for concern.
  • B4 Tempered products used in areas such as side glass and backlighting.
  • B5 Tempered products used anywhere in the driver's field of vision, such as the roof glass or behind the "B" pillar on trucks, are not a problem.
  • B6 Polycarbonate (PC) coated products used in areas such as fixed side windows and fixed rear lighting.
  • B7 Products with a polycarbonate (PC) coating used anywhere in the driver's field of vision, such as fixed roof windows or behind the “B” pillar on trucks.

These specifications were originally designed for machined safety glasses that meet national and international standards used in motor vehicle windows.

The following tolerances for glasses defined in the standard should be specified on the engineering drawing:

  • Glass material structure including color
  • Individual floor structure thickness
  • Gradient band, coatings (including which surface the coating is applied to)
  • Determining which surface is air or tin
  • grid lines
  • Blackout pattern (as in skylights)
