SAE J2527 XENON Tests

SAE J2527 is a performance-based standard for accelerated weather conditions that uses a Xenon Arc as a light source to simulate outdoor sunlight exposure on an accelerated basis. EUROLAB Laboratory offers SAE J2527 testing services as part of its UV testing and Automotive testing offering. For this standard, it refers to the application of ASTM G155 when specifying specific testing and monitoring conditions. Testing to ASTM G155 using a suitable combination of filters allows for an accelerated reproduction of the weathering effects that occur when materials are exposed to sunlight, heat, and moisture. The exposure conditions required in SAE J2527 are the same as cycle 155 of ASTM G7. This test includes the different conditions your vehicle will see in a real world environment. These conditions include heat, sunlight, and humidity.

SAE J2527 Test Experimental Parameters
The test cycle for SAE J2527 consists of different test steps including: Dark Time, Spray (Front and Rear) and different light cycles for different times.
Unlike ASTM G-155, where many parameters must be specified, SAE J2527 is very specific about what test conditions should be used. The parameters are as follows:

  • Interior lamp filter: Quartz
  • External lamp filter: Borosilicate
  • Lamp brightness level: 0,55 watts X meters -2 X nm -1
  • Room air temperature – light cycle: 47 oC
  • Room air temperature – dark cycle: 38 oC
  • Room relative humidity – light cycle: 50%
  • Room relative humidity – dark cycle: 95%
  • Black panel temperature – light cycle: 70 oC
  • Black panel temperature – dark cycle: 38 oC
  • Timing of light/dark cycle with sample surface spray

SAE J2527 Test Result Observation

SAE J2527 requires the use of reference polystyrene chips to monitor test performance. Products are exposed to a set of specific time intervals. Product color is tracked on the b-axis as per ASTM D2244 testing and color change is tracked for each time interval. The measured color change should be within the acceptable range specified by the reference polystyrene product supplier.
