ISO 11898-1 Road Vehicles - Data Link Layer and Physical Signaling Testing

Controller area network is a serial communication protocol that supports distributed real-time control and multiplexing for use in road vehicles and other control applications. The CAN protocol was designed to be a reliable and fault-tolerant communication method.

It uses a multi-master bus architecture, which means multiple ECUs can communicate on the same bus without a central controller. The protocol also includes mechanisms for detecting and correcting errors such as checksums and validations.

ISO 11898-1 specifies the Classic CAN frame format and the newly introduced CAN Flexible Data Rate Frame format. The classic CAN frame format allows bitrates of up to 1 Mbit/s and payloads of up to 8 bytes per frame. The Flexible Data Rate frame format allows for bitrates greater than 1 Mbit/s and payloads longer than 8 bytes per frame.
