The SAE J306 Standard defines limits for classification of automotive gear lubricants in rheological terms (ie, oil flow and deformation). This standard is designed for use by OEMs to identify and recommend automotive gear, axle and manual transmission fluids.
SAE J306 last saw major revisions in 2005, so it's no surprise that today's requirements for low viscosity automotive gear oils are not adequately defined by this revision. This requirement has led to the revision of SAE J306, which helps to adequately identify current and future low-viscosity fluids.
Featuring precision viscosity bands, the SAE J306 revision provides a framework for developing low-viscosity fluids with the appropriate balance of efficiency and durability. The introduction of new lower viscosity grades allows more efficient automotive gear oils to work in concert with advanced hardware designs; where the lubricant allows for equipment design improvements and directly contributes to increased productivity with its low viscosity properties.
