SAE J3068 Test Standard for Electric Vehicle Powertrain Using a Three-Phase Coupler

SAE J3068 is a recommended application for conductive charging of Electric Vehicles and Supply Equipment using three-phase AC power. Offering a symmetrical three-phase load improves grid stability, especially at high power levels. SAE J3068 standardizes AC three-phase charging Coupler and digital control protocols, offering sufficient power and reliability for the commercial vehicle market.

Existing technology is combined with additional diagnostics to deliver higher power than existing charging solutions in the passenger car industry. Three-phase AC charging limited to PWM controls, providing interoperability with J1772 protocols whenever possible, as well as DC charging on separate contacts with PLC controls are described.

Minimum power requirement communication option supports fixed loads such as cooling, which cannot control current draw except in on or off mode. Only symmetrical three-phase AC sources are supported in this initial release. Asymmetrical consumables such as corner-ground Delta and High-Leg-Delta may be supported in a future release.
