This SAE J3105 standard covers general physical, electrical, functional, test and performance requirements for conductive power transmission for vehicles using a conductive ACD connection capable of transmitting DC power. It defines conductive power transmission methods, including the infrastructure electrical contact interface, the vehicle connection interface, the electrical characteristics of the DC source, and the communication system. It also covers the functional and dimensional requirements for the vehicle connection interface and the feeding equipment interface.
A configuration is described in this document to ensure interoperability for road vehicles (especially buses and coaches). Other configurations can be used for non-standard applications (eg mining trucks or port vehicles).
There are also subdocuments identified by SAE J3105/1, SAE J3105/2 and SAE J3105/3. These would be specific requirements for a particular interface defined in the subdocument.
SAE J3105/1: The Infrastructure-Mounted Cross-Rail Connector covers the relevant connection interface requirements for an electric vehicle powertrain system using a conductive auto-connect device based on the cross-rail design.
SAE J3105/2: The Vehicle Mounted Pantograph Link covers the relevant link-interface requirements for an electric vehicle powertrain system using a conductive automatic charger based on a conventional rail vehicle pantograph design.
SAE J3105/3: The Closed Pin and Socket Connector covers the main safety and interoperability requirements for an electric vehicle powertrain system using a conductive autocharger based on a closed pin and socket design.
